Printed Ephemera — 1822-1830
Mr Kean as King Lear
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Kean in the role of King Lear. The portrait is signed 'WH' and titled 'Hodgsons Theatrical Portraits'. Such prints would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Kean continued to play Shakespeare's tragic roles until 1833, when he collapsed onstage during a performance of Othello.
