Printed Ephemera — 1831-1835
William IV
Handcoloured souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of King William IV in his Coronation Robes, seated on the Coronation throne. The portrait has applied clothing of shaded silk and cotton velvet robes embellished with metal foil & tinsel ornaments. The crown, orb, throne, et cetera are also of tinsel. Published by M & M Skelt to commemorate the Coronation of William IV, such portraits would have been sold plain as souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Tinsel portraits usually depicted theatrical scenes, though some featuring monarchs, national heroes and allegorical subjects were also published.
