Printed Ephemera — 1831-1835
Queen Adelaide
Handcoloured souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of Queen Adelaide in her Coronation Robes, seated on the Coronation throne. The portrait has applied clothing of paper and cotton velvet robes embellished with metal foil and tinsel ornaments, silver tassels and pink ribbons. The crown, orb, and throne are also of tinsel. Published by M & M Skelt to commemorate the Coronation of William IV, such portraits would have been sold plain as souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Tinsel portraits usually depicted theatrical scenes, though some featuring monarchs, national heroes and allegorical subjects were also published.
