Mr Gomersall as Earl Douglas
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Gomersall in the role of Earl Douglas in Chevy Chase. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments, notably on the dress accessories and weapons. The clothing is of silk and the sash of woven cotton tartan. The portrait and some handcoloured background scenery has been cut from a sheet and mounted on gold card. Published 4 June 1832 by Orlando Hodgson. Such portraits would have been sold for 1d plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
