Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1709-1722
The Elevation of Marlborough House to St James's Park, invented by Christopher Wren Esq, 1709.
The Elevation of Marlborough House to St James's Park, invented by Christopher Wren Esq, 1709. The house was erected in 1709-1711, largely at the instigation of Sarah, Duches of Marlborough. From the dedication to the Duke (1650-1722) of the companion engraving 80.501/966 they date from his lifetime. This plate, from Vitruvius Britannicus, has a dedication to the duchess as Princess of Mendelheim (Mindelheim); that princely title was conferred on the Duke by the Emperor Jospeph I in 1705 after the battle of Blenheim the previous year.
