Lady Howe's Villa.
Lady Howe's Villa. It seems likely that 'Lady' Howe is Sophia Howe, who bought Alexander Pope's house on the river at Twickenham in 1807 and put an end to the custom - maintained by intervening owners - of it being open to the public who wished to see Pope's much admired gardens and grotto. She went so far as to destroy the house, gardens and (partially) the grotto and built another house on the site, and was henceforth known as 'Queen of the Goths'. 80.501/895 and 80.501/896 show the house in Pope's day and when owned by Welbore Ellis, demonstrating changes to the building.
