Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1834
Interior of the Auction Mart.
This print depicts the interior of the Auction Mart which stood opposite the eastern front of the Bank of England in Bartholomew Lane, built 1808-1810 to the designs of John Walters. Estates, annuities, shares in public institutions, pictures, books, and other properties were sold there at public auction. It was demolished in 1865, being replaced by a new auction mart in Tokenhouse Yard.
A clock on a pedestal together with a counter against the back wall are shown surmounted by an upstairs gallery. On the right the drawing is dominated by a sweeping staircase and a wall of windows.
An aquatint of this drawing was published in Ackermann's Repository of Arts in August 1811, with the architecture by Auguste Pugin and the figures in the foreground by Thomas Rowlandson.
There was an accompanying acquatint, Auction Mart Coffee Room in October. Both aquatints later appeared as plates 63 and 64 of Papworth's Select Views of London, 1816. This engraving was published for Partington's National History and Views of London.
