Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1797-06
Near Battle Bridge, Middx.
Near Battle Bridge, Middlesex. The engraving shows a mean thatched cottage in a rural setting with a pump outside, and two figures, one with a dog and carrying a bundle of sticks on his shoulder. Battle Bridge ('Broad Ford Bridge') was a small village on the Fleet River on the site of King's Cross, the name it took when a monument was erected in 1836 at the crossing of Euston, Pentonville, Gray's Inn and St Pancras Roads topped by a statue of George IV. The statue was removed in 1840 and the 'Cross' was demolished in 1845. King's Cross station was built in 1851-2.
