Cleveland House by St James's
Cleveland House by St James's, with a bird's-eye view and front view. Built in the 1620s for Thomas Howard and named Berkshire House when he became Earl of Berkshire; later occupied by Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon while waiting for the short-lived Clarendon House in Piccadilly to be completed; then by Charles II's mistress the Countess of Castlemaine, Barbara Villiers, and renamed Cleveland House when she became Duchess of Cleveland in 1670. It is shown as it was prior to substantial rebuilding by the Duke of Bridgwater in the 1790s. It was demolished in 1840-1.
