Rectorial House, Newington Butts; from the South East
Rectorial House, Newington Butts.
A short description of the house and its occupants is appended - and corrected - in the caption.
"Records show that in 1547 [the rectory] was given by the King to the Bishop of Worcester. Soon afterwards, Roger de Santo Albano, the then Rector, built a new Rectory nearby. Records from the 19th century indicate that the Rectory stood near the church and churchyard, and that the garden and glebe were surrounded by ditches or moats, which tended to flood extensively. Not long into the 19th century the moats were filled in, and the Rectory was altered and enlarged, the weather-boarding being replaced by stucco. It remained in use until the church moved to its present site [1876], when a new Rectory was soon afterwards built adjacent to the church."
