London Wall & St Giles's Cripplegate
Engraving of London Wall and St Giles, Cripplegate - the bastion beside the Museum and the church, built in 1545-50, which escaped the Great Fire but was destroyed (except for the tower and walls) in the Blitz.
Milton is buried here but in 1793 his coffin was opened and five teeth were smashed from his jaw and these, a rib and chunks of hair were pulled out as souvenirs. His body was put on display at 3d admission by the caretaker.
