Monument to Frances Countess of Sussex in Westminster Abbey
Monument to Frances Countess of Sussex in Westminster Abbey. Frances (1531-1589) was the daughter of Sir William Sidney and the aunt of the poet Sir Philip Sidney. She married Thomas Radcliffe in 1555, and thus became countess of Sussex. The print was taken when the engraving was incomplete - the inscriptions have not been included. There is a pencil attribution to J[ohn] Cole, who was a bookseller and antiquary, came from Northamptonshire but later opened a bookshop in Scarborough and devoted his life to those areas (Oxford DNB). The date seems too late for this print, and other similar prints (e.g. 80.501/188) are certainly by B[enjamin] Cole.
