Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice
Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634) was one of the most noted English jurists, serving in many high legal offices, including Attorney-General and Lord Chief Justice, in which position he asserted the common law over the royal prerogative and was eventually dismissed in 1616. But by 1628, in Parliament, he was one of the authors of the Petition of Right against Charles I.
