William Duke of Gloucester
William, Duke of Gloucester, ( 1689-1700) was th eonly son of Queen Anne and George to survive infancy. However he suffered from encephalitis and died at the age of eleven. This engraving has a weeping Britannia underneath th eportrait which represents the loss felt by the nation. It was published as the frontispiece to Tindal's Continuation of Rapin's History in 1758.
