General John Desborough
General John Desborough, (Disbrowe), Major-General, 1608-80, was the son of a wealthy Cambridgeshire landowner and initially trained as a lawyer. In 1636 he married Jane Cromwell, sister of Oliver Cromwell, and rose to high office under the Commonwealth. At the Restoration, he fled to the Netherlands but was brought back in 1666 and spent a year in the Tower before retiring to Hackney.
