William Lenthall, Speaker of the House of Commons
William Lenthall, speaker of the House of Commons (1591-1662) who defied Charles I and served the Commonwealth but supported Monck and the return of Charles II, gave evidence against the regicides and died in peaceful retirement at Burford.
