Anthony Ashley Cooper. Earl of Shaftesbury
Anthony Ashley Cooper. Earl of Shaftesbury - from an Original Picture in the Collection of the Dutchess of Dorset at Knowle. This seems to be the first Earl of Shaftesbury (they are all named Anthony Ashley Cooper): 1621-1683, a royalist who defected to the Parliamentarians but then supported the return of Charles II, became Lord Chancellor, but was suspicious of the king's religious tendencies, showed support for the Levellers, was accused but acquitted of treason, and fled to the Netherlands where he died.
