Social History — C. 1999
Badge, lapel badge
The International Wages for Housework Campaign (IWHC) was launched by Selma James, a New York-born socialist and feminist activist who founded the Crossroads Women's Centre in North London. James wrote the Women's Movement classics 'A Woman's Place' and 'The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community'. The latter inspired the campaign for governments to pay women wages for unpaid housework.
Black Women for Wages for Housework was an international grass roots campaigning organisation affiliated to the IWHC. The London branch was based at the Crossroads Women's Centre in Kentish Town. This badge was produced by the organisation to protest against 'Environmental Racism', the disproportionate effect of environmental problems on black and ethnic minority communities.
