Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Tinsel print
Theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of an unnamed actor in the character role of a sailor. This was probably a sample portrait but other such portraits would have been sold for 1d plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Applied to the portrait is clothing of shaded silk with belt buckle, buttons and scarf formed from metal foil tinsel ornaments. The portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and mounted onto card hanpainted with background scenery. Printed on the card is 'Coloured and sold Wholesale & Retail by J.Redington, at his theatrical print, play & tinsel warehouse, 208 Hoxton Old Town and Jonathan King, 45 Chapel St Somers Town'.
