Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mr Phelps as Hamlet
Theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Phelps in the role of Hamlet. This was probably a sample portrait. Most theatrical souvenir portraits would have been sold plain for 1d and would have been decorated at home. Applied to the portrait is clothing of shaded silk and cotton embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments. The cape is of cotton velvet. The sword is of metal foil. The portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and mounted onto card hand painted with background scenery. Printed on the card is 'Coloured and sold Wholesale & Retail by J.Redington, at his theatrical print, play & tinsel warehouse, 208 Hoxton Old Town and Jonathan King, 45 Chapel St Somers Town'.
