Trousers, performance costume Jokoto
The Adzido Pan African Ensemble is a music and dance company with a 'mission to promote the richly diverse cultural heritage of Black Africa and to enrich the general body of creative work in the Black diaspora'. Founded in 1984, this North London company stages performances of traditional music and dance from all over Africa. Trousers like these are worn as traditional male attire in Northern Africa, in countries with an Islamic influence.
The pants are formed from patches of brightly coloured, printed cotton rectangular shaped patches sewn together, with a drawstring waistband and a blue cotton trim around the hem & waistband. The fabrics are decorated using the wax-resist techniques popular in West Africa.
