Children playing on a Ford Popular CX motorcar, Stepney
Humphrey Spender photographed these young children clambering over a Model Y Ford motorcar parked in a side street in Stepney, east London. Although, by the end of the 1930s, over 350,000 Londoners owned a private motor car it would still have been a novelty, at this time, for children in working class areas to see a car parked in their street. Such a sight often heralded the arrival of an 'outsider', such as a doctor.
