Liverpool Street Station underground shelter during the Blitz
Safe against the bombs falling above, a family sleeps in the depths of Liverpool Street Station. Their careless poses suggest the 'intermingled bodies, with the hot, smelly air and continual murmur of snores' Bill Brandt encountered when making these photographs. But this scene may be posed. Brandt was happy to use artifice to achieve the image he was after.
