Printed Ephemera — 1842
Card, valentine card
Single cobweb, beehive or flowercage valentine's card with a central handcoloured lithographed print of a floral bouquet cut into circular strips and a centrally applied cotton thread. When pulled, the thread raises the cut paper to produce a cobweb or cage effect revealing beneath a black and white engraving of a man delivering a valentine's card. Above and below the bouquet is printed an eight line love verse and the decoration is framed by a solid embossed outer border by Dobbs. On the back of the top sheet is handwritten a two stanza love verse dated 25th Feb 1842 dedicated to Eliza Hamilton who is mentioned in the poem. The back of the card is missing.
