Damage to Aldersgate Street caused by a V-1 'flying bomb' , 1st July 1944
This photograph records bomb damage to 79-81 Aldersgate Street, near the Barbican area of London. The damage was caused by a V-1 flying bomb that fell during a raid on the City on 1 July 1944. The damaged buildings seen in the photo were previously occupied by four businesses, the tailor Rosenberg Davies, the silk merchants Krieger David, a jewellery shop and a tobacconists.
Police Constables Arthur Cross and Fred Tibbs photographed the devastated street as rescue teams and wardens scrambled to find any trapped survivors.
