Photograph, silver gelatin print
This photograph shows the Dutch Church at Austin Friars in ruins after bombing in 1940. Edward VI first granted the site to Protestant refugees from the Netherlands in 1550. There were no Protestant churches in the Netherlands at this time, so these refugees built the first Protestant church to hold its service in Dutch. In 1950 the church was rebuilt in its location in the alleyways in the heart of the City.
