Social History — C. 1983
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was produced as part of the Greater London Council (GLC) campaign against nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. In 1980 Manchester City Council declared the city a 'nuclear free zone'. Many local authorities followed suit across the country.
The GLC adopted an anti-nuclear stance by campaigning against nuclear weapons and the transportation of nuclear waste through London by British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL). In the 1980s protests were organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and other groups against the transport of flasks of nuclear waste by train from power stations to reprocessing stations like Sellafield in Cumbria. Anti-nuclear campaigners would 'spot' nuclear trains as they passed through London.
