Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Handfinished, three dimensional valentine's card incorporating a card box frame. Attached to the base of the box, by means of folded paper hinges, is a white and silver lace paper sheet shaped in the design of three canopied open archways. Through the open areas can be seen three paper motifs applied directly to the box below. The central motif comprises a paper print of a young man greeting his lover over a garden wall. Through the other two archways are applied two paper roundels one printed 'With fond affection', the other printed with a love verse entitled 'A Blessing'. Applied to the lace paper sheet are sprigs of red cotton flowers on cotton stems. The sides of the box are lined with a white lace paper border.
