Bomb-damaged bus, Arthur Street by King William Street, 9th September 1940
This photograph shows a bomb damaged bus in Arthur Street in the City of London. The high explosive bomb that caused the damage to the bus and the surrounding buildings fell at 3.30am on 9 September 1940. This photo was taken later the same day by Police Constables Arthur Cross and Fred Tibbs.
London Transport attempted to run 'business as usual' during World War II but many buses were damaged by falling schrapnel and bombs. Many bus routes were also disrupted by impassable roads blocked by falling debris. Bomb damaged buses were replaced by reinforcements sent from Scotland.
