Ear piece, ear trumpet
Celluloid ear trumpets made by the West End firm Acousticons, consisting of two trumpets attached to an adjustable metal headband, with detachable ear pieces for inserting in the ears. The maker's name is stamped on both trumpets. The small end fits into the wearer's ear, while the large, flared end picks up and amplifies ambient sounds. This simple device is an early type of hearing aid, and a predecessor of electric hearing aids which were introduced in the early 20th century.
