Printed Ephemera — 1840-1865
Card, valentine card
Sample comic valentine's card printed with a handcoloured portrait of a woman attempting to pass through a narrow gate. A caption from her mouth reads 'However shall I get it in?'. Below is printed an eight line verse 'Picture to yourself a Lass, Brought to such a pretty pass; And tell me if you think it wise To make yourself so huge a size? Perchance you make each smiling elf, Think you are one besides yourself'. Such prints were mass produced and cheaply produced. Although love was a dominant theme for Valenine's cards, cards intended to be insulting or comic were also common.
