Printed Ephemera — 1841-02-14
Card, valentine card
Single cobweb, beehive or flowercage valentine's card with a central handcoloured lithographed print of a pink rose cut into circular strips and a centrally applied cotton thread. When pulled the thread raises the cut paper to produce a cobweb or cage effect revealing beneath a small black and white image of a man and woman seated on a bench. Above and below the rose is printed an 8 line love verse. On the back of the top sheet is handwritten a three stanza love verse dated 14th Feb 1841. The back of the card also acts as an envelope and includes the recipient's name and address: 'Miss Eliza Hamilton care of Mrs Hamilton No 21 St Andrew Square Glasgow'. Part of the red seal and two postmarks are also evident on the envelope.
