Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
A Lament
Comic and cruel valentine's card comprising a single sheet of white card printed with a caricature portrait of a woman with accentuated facial features. Entitled 'A Lament Am I not fallen away vilely? - King Henry IV' there follows a four line cruel verse: 'Your looks have gone, your teeth have passed away, You mouth is hardly what it was when young, Both sight and hair speak plainly of decay, and leave you but one feature strong - your tongue'. The portrait is printed in green ink and is signed 'JK' presumably Jonathan King, who produced, sold and collected valentine's cards.
