Social History — 1951
Container, sugar dredger
This orange sugar dredger is part of a condiment set that was displayed at the Festival of Britain in 1951. It is made of an early type of plastic called 'Beetleware'. This product was admired by the Council of Industrial Design (CoID) for its clean, simple curved form which was achieved through the use of moulded plastic. CoID was set up by the government after the war to influence public taste in favour of modern design, and they played a key role in selecting exhibits for the South Bank Exhibition.
