Printed Ephemera — 1841-1860
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card, the front formed from two layers of lace paper attached by folded paper 'springs' to give a 3d effect. The under layer by Kershaw is of gilded and white lace paper heavily embossed with a floral design surrounding a central plain roundel. The top layer is of silver and white lace paper with an embossed flower design. Each of the four corners has a roundel of lace paper cut in a spiral with a central thread. As the thread is pulled the paper lifts to produce a cobweb or beehive effect. Below are revealed four applied coloured paper medallions printed with images of cupid in various poses. Applied to the centre of this sheet is a cut out paper figure of a woman dressed in clothes of pink and white rice paper decorated with silver paper stars and garlands. The card is also decorated with garlands of embossed green paper leaves and a paper scroll printed 'To a dear friend'.
