Printed Ephemera — 1813-1816
Card, valentine card
Cobweb, beehive or flowercage valentine's card marked 'Dobb's Patent' with central, handcoloured print of a pink rose cut into circular strips. When raised from the centre the cut paper unravels to produce a cobweb or cage effect revealing a love poem handwritten below. The flower is framed by a solid embossed border with a shell corner design and a gilded paper edge. The paper also has an outer solid embossed border, each corner decorated with an embossed illustration showing cherubs and cupid figures in various situations. The paper bears a watermark for 1813 with the maker's name 'Pine, Smith & Allnutt'.
