Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card. The under sheet comprises an uncoloured, lace paper border surrounding a central panel of cream satin. Applied to the centre of this panel is a cream watered silk roundel framed by an embossed paper leaf, flower and fruit wreath. Applied above the silk is a paper hut with cherub figures decorated with feathers & dried grasses. A paper scroll above is printed 'Can you tell me how to build a happy home'. The card is bordered by two additional silver & lace paper frames attached one above the other by paper springs or hinges to give a three dimensional effect. The top border is heavily embossed with a rural scene showing reclining figures, deer and foliage.
