Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising two sheets of lace paper stuck one above the other and finished with applied decoration. The under sheet, by Kershaw, is uncoloured and comprises a lace paper border embossed with medallions illustrating aspects of the harvesting process. Applied to the oval shaped central panel is an arrangement of petal edged paper roundels. Each of the roundels flaps down to reveal love tokens and messages printed on paper scrolls beneath. Below an applied paper cartouche with a gilded border is printed 'Cupid's Letter rack, may it often contain a letter from you'. This central decoration is framed by a top border of silver and white lace paper embossed with a flower and leaf design. Applied to this border is a garland of white cotton lily of the valley flowers.
