Printed Ephemera — 1865-1880
Pal-O'-Mine
Sheet music for the popular music hall song 'Pal-O'-Mine', composed and sung by Alfred 'The Great' Vance. The cover is printed with a colour lithograph illustration by Alfred Concanen of 'The Great Vance' standing before Simpson's Tavern. Alfred 'The Great' Vance was one of the fashionable 'swells' of the music hall, known collectively as the Lions Comiques. Along with George Leybourne and Arthur Lloyd, The Great Vance had a reputation of living the high life and it was commented, in the late 19th century, that these Lions Comiques were men who set women just a little higher than their bottle.
The Great Vance was particularly known for singing about fashionable locations such as the Zoological Gardens. Here he stands before Simpson's Tavern, a fashionable restaurant and 'chop house' located at Cornhill in the City of London.
