John Hunter
John Hunter (1728-93) was an anatomist and surgeon who moved to London from Scotland in 1748. He became Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767 and Surgeon-General in 1790. His collection of almost 14,000 natural history objects formed the basis of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow founded 1807.
He is portrayed seated half turned from a table on which are shown his books such as Natural History of Vegetables while in an alcove behind can be seen the lower half of a skeleton indicating his professional status. Two specimen bottles are also on display.
William Sharp was one of th eeighteenth century's most accomplished engravers producing many prints from paintings by Reynolds and excelling in portraits.
