Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Multi-layerd, handfinished valentine's card. The under sheet has a white lace paper border embossed with a roundel design surrounding a panel of cotton gauze. Through the gauze can be seen a handcoloured illustration of a lake, fountain and bridge painted on the inner sheet below. Applied above this layer, by means of paper springs or hinges, are sections of lace paper painted silver, blue or gold which together form a scene incorporating pillars, foliage, figures and a boat which frames and enhances the painting below the gauze. The card also has an applied garland of dried grasses, shells and velvet covered wire.
