Printed Ephemera — 1841-1869
I love thee as the glad bird loves the freedom of his wing
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising an under sheet of silver and white lace paper by Windsor, cameo embossed with two figures, one of a lady dancing and one of a male musician each surrounded by an embossed floral wreath. Above is attached by paper springs or hinges a top sheet of gilded & white lace paper with a border design incorporating cherubs, flowers and pillars surrounding a central panel of cotton net. Applied to the net panel is a glass mirror surrounded by a frame of white embossed paper leaves. Below is applied a cut out paper figure of a female figure, her clothes decorated with folded strips of white rice paper and gilded paper leaves. At the bottom is applied a paper rectangle printed 'I love thee as the glad bird loves the freedom of his wing'.
