Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
To my dear boy
Handfinished multi-layered valentine's card comprising an uncoloured undersheet by Mossman of white lace paper with a roundel design and cupid figures surrounding a cameo embossed image of two classical figures. Applied above this central image is a plain white paper oval panel surrounded by a silver and white lace paper border with embossed flower and bird design by Mansell. Above this is applied an oval coloured, embossed paper print of a lake with a young girl sleeping in the foreground, framed by a wreath of cupid figures, flowers and foliage. Below is an embossed paper cartouche with a coloured illustration of a boat at sea and a scroll printed 'To my dear boy'. This central decoration is surrounded by a gilded and torquoise lace paper border. The layers are applied one one top of the other by paper springs.
