Printed Ephemera — 1863
Accept this gift & love the giver
Handfinished valentine's card comprising a top sheet of silver and white lace paper heavily embossed with a design incorporating figures seated on the ground surrounded by trees, flowers and foliage. In the centre is an integral roundel surrounded by a lace paper frame embossed with flower garlands. This embossed design is concealed by decoration applied to the top of the sheet. This comprises a raffia basket filled with dried grasses, cotton and embossed paper flowers surrounded by a wreath of silver paper and cream satin leaves embellished with dried seeds, two silver paper doves and gilded glass beads. Below the basket is an applied paper scroll printed 'Accept this gift & love the giver'. Inside the card is stuck a sheet of paper handwritten with a manufacturer's price list referring to decorations used to embellish valentine's cards, such as 'cupids' and 'mottoes'. The sheet is dated 1863.
