Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Cupid's Life
Handfinished valentine's card comprising a sheet of gilded and white lace paper embossed with a border decoration surrounding a central panel of cream watered silk. Applied to the panel is a length of folded paper entitled 'Cupid's Life'. When unravelled the paper is printed one side with coloured images of Cupid's life and on the reverse with written titles for each stage of his life, such as 'The Childhood of Cupid'. The panel is flanked by two panels of gilded lace paper with a central lilac coloured area attached to the under sheet by paper springs or hinges. Applied to the panels are paper scrolls printed 'present' and 'future'. The lilac area opens to reveal a printed coloured paper image below. Under 'present' is an image of a couple getting married. Under 'future' is an image of a mother, father and child seated in their home. Below the two panels are applied garlands of embossed coloured paper flowers and leaves.
