Printed Ephemera — 1860-1874
Programme, concert programme
Concert programme printed with a selection of the words of songs sung during a concert performance at the Islington Philharmonic Hall. The yellow front cover of the programme is letterpress printed with a list of performers and information about ticket seats and hall facilities. On the reverse is printed an illustrated advertisement for Samuel Brothers outfitters, 29 Ludgate Hill. Inside the back cover is printed a menu with a list and price of the refreshments that could be bought at the Hall.
The Islington Philharmonic Hall opened in 1860 with a seating capacity of 1,500. Within ten years it had acquired a reputation as a somewhat grubby variety hall nicknamed 'The Spittoon'. In 1871 the hall was rescued in by Charles Morton who introduced a buffet and private boxes and restored a programme of opera and operettas.
