Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
From an affectionate friend
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card formed from three sheets of lace paper attached one above the other by paper springs or hinges to create a 3 dimensional effect. The middle layer comprises a white lace paper sheet by Wood, heavily embossed with a central design of two figures reclining against a garden wall. The male figure is playing a lute and in the foreground is a fountain, above is a canopied curtain. The top layer comprises a gilded and white lace paper border by Windsor with embossed flower design surrounding a central panel of cotton net. Applied to the top is a paper scroll printed 'From an affectionate friend', below is an applied garland of embossed paper leaves and flowers. Through the net panel can be seen the decoration of the under layers.
