Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Mechanical, handfinished valentine's card comprising a sheet of gilded and white lace paper with embossed border pattern surrounding a central lace paper oval medallion decorated with a leaf design. Applied to the panel is an embossed coloured paper bouquet of flowers with a silk cord protruding from the stalks beneath. When the cord is pulled the flowers from the bouquet shoot upwards revealing tabs printed with a single word such as 'Peace', 'Happiness' and 'joy'. Behind the flowers are a series of small medallions printed with coloured scenes and figures such as a wedding or a family christmas. These are revealed when the flowers flap down. The inner sheet of the card is painted lilac. The side seam of the card has manufacturer's handwritten stock details.
