Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
To a dear friend
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising two lace paper sheets attached one on top of the other by paper springs or hinges to give a 3 dimensional effect. The under layer, by Windsor, comprises a white sheet with a lace paper border and applied decoration of a paper panel printed with an image of a dancing maiden framed by an applied wreath of embossed silver leaves and white and yellow cotton flowers. The top sheet comprises a gilded and light blue lace paper border only with embossed floral design. This acts as a second frame for the applied decoration below. This top border is decorated with an applied garland of embossed paper leaves, cotton flowers and dried grasses and a paper scroll printed 'To a dear friend'. The sides of the border have applied paper floral 'scrap' garlands.
