Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card comprising two layers of lace paper and a plain back or inner sheet. The top layer comprises a panel of cotton net surrounded by a lilac and silver lace paper border. Applied to the centre of the panel are four paper 'scrap' letters with floral borders spelling 'L O V F' (presumably the 'F' was intended to be an 'E'). The sheet below, by Mansell, comprises a white lace paper border surrounding a central panel decorated with an applied paper medallion printed with an image of cupid on a raft. This print is framed by an inner wreath of cream satin and silver paper leaves and an outer wreath of cotton net and silver embossed paper leaves. This applied decoration can be seen through the cotton net gauze of the top layer when the card is closed.
